  • Leroy Vinnegar - Leroy Walks! (1957)
    Walkin' By the River (5:33)

  • The Walking Bass style was a fundamental one in the development of jazz swing, and emerged wtih the gradual shifting of focus away from the stride piano bass lines of early jazz. The player plays long, flexible lines of quarter notes in steady 4/4 metre, at varying degrees of distance from the underlying harmony of the tune. the style enables the bassists to create a kind of countermelodoy to the soloist, while simultaneously supporting the harmonic progression and providing a regular pulse. Leroy Vinnegar was the master.

  • George Winston - Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions: A Hurricane Relief Benefit (2006)
    The Breaks (4:15)

  • New Orleans Social Club - Sing Me Back Home (2006)
Walking To New Orleans (dr. john) (3:13)

  • Wynton Marsalis - From The Plantation To The Penitentiary (2007)
    Where Y'all At? (5:48)

Long an outspoken figure in the jazz world and a lightning rod for debate over what constitutes the so called "jazz tradition," Marsalis is less concerned about the direction of jazz music here and more about the direction of American society. Obviously spurred on by the war in Iraq, the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina (which ravaged his hometown of New Orleans), and what he clearly views as a gluttonous, vapid, misogynist and deeply racist American culture, Marsalis has crafted a bluesy, cerebral, soul-inflected album reminiscent of work by such iconic artists as Charles Mingus and Nina Simone.

  • Chester Thompson - Powerhouse (Black Jazz Records, 1971)
    Weird Harold (5:53)

In the late 60's, a pianist by the name of Gene Russell recognized the need for a jazz music record label which would produce and distribute quality recordings targeted toward the growing market of African centric awareness. In it's heyday, Black Jazz Records represented a new and fresh alternative to traditional jazz, embodying the spirit of the black/urban awakening of the civil rights period. During it's six year existence, the record label made a major impact on the jazz world, both domestically and in foreign territories.

  • Gabor Szabo - Spellbinder (1966)
    Gypsy Queen (5:13)

A superb album from the mid 60's, Szabo combined his Hungarian roots with traditional jazz to create an unequaled hybrid of jazz guitar. His influence was wide-ranging, which can be seen by the fact that the rock group The Doors lifted the beginning Gypsy Queen for their epic song The End.
